A native of Minnesota, soon-to-be-Dr. Kyle Schiefelbein is Lecturer in Liturgical and Theological Studies and Coordinator of Online Education, where he oversees the Flexible Life M.Div. option and teaches courses in history, theology and worship. Kyle has a passion for the church and enjoys working with students to figure out how to best proclaim the gospel in our contemporary context. While he stays pretty busy with work, church and school, Kyle finds times to hang out with friends, go to movies and walk around the East Bay, taking in the beauty of God’s creation.
What does it mean to be a seminary in the 21st century? The only way to answer this question is to ask what it means to be the church in the 21st century. In an article written 20 years ago, scholar of American religion Mark Noll wrote that Lutherans, even though their influence in the larger history of American Christianity has been limited, have much to offer American religious life, especially as it relates to who God is and who the human person is (“The Lutheran Difference,” First Things no. 20 [Feb. 1992]: 31-40). In order to accomplish this task, Noll wrote that Lutherans must remain authentically Lutheran and figure out how to speak Lutheranism with an American tone. I believe that this is why seminary education has, is and will continue to remain a vital resource for Lutherans in the United States; it is in our seminary classrooms and our contextual education sites that our students learn to do just that. Yes, the face of theological education is changing, and it must change to address the 21st-century world, but I believe that strong, academically-grounded and pastorally-relevant programs are still key, and that is what PLTS is doing.
